SMH reported "Polanski faces weeks in jail before an appeal against his arrest over a 32-year statutory rape charge is heard in court".
OK, so we know this refers to a charge from 32 years ago, or a 32 year old charge. But the way it was written was and made me look twice. I don't think it's technically correct - at least not in Australia.

I’ve had enough! The standard of Australian journalism I read on a daily basis has consistently dropped year after year and I can’t stand it any longer. I don’t know if it's because of a reliance on technology, too much outsourcing to low-cost foreign types or simply lax standards, but fair suck of the sauce bottle; it’s gone too far!
As an avid newspaper reader for decades I remember when there were few or no errors in newspapers and magazines in Australia. Today, misspellings and misuse proliferate on a daily basis.
The industry laments and bleats about its seeming demise in the face of the internet, but letting standards of grammar and style slip only makes things worse. Have some self-respect! So from now on every error I see in the Australian media, it’s going here mate!
What do I want to achieve?
I hope that this blog raises awareness of this problem so that in time the tide can turn and we can once again enjoy pleasant and faultless journalism worth paying for!
And by keeping a written record I hope to prove to myself that I’m just imagining all of these errors. It can’t be that bad. Really? Can it?
